He lived, at the time of this drawing, at Castle Kilranock, Gollanfield, nr Nairn.

| Seymour Haden, Etcher |
On the Test
(1818-1910) was an important etcher and a founder of the Modern Etching Movement. Most of his 250 plates date from 1865 when J A M Whistler stayed with him in London. They influenced on another & Haden was also much impressed by Rembrandt, publishing a volume of his etchings in 1879. Also a practicing surgeon, he founded the Royal Society of etcher painters in 1880. On the Test is one of his most collected works.

"On the Test"
Haden (1818-1910) was an important etcher and mezzotint engraver of landscapes and marine subjects. Born in London he practiced as a surgeon and etched in his spare time, Most of his completed plates were made when James Whistler stayed with him and the each influenced one another's work- they were regarded as the founders of the 'Modern Etching Movement'.He founded the R.E in1880 and was its first president.
